What does the type B RCD function?

There is an increasing demands on type B RCD

There is an increasing demands on type B RCD in residual electricity system and commercial distribution system.

Different type Ac,A,F,B could detect different fault current, type A is widely used in many situation while it could not be detect residual direct current. So in a case, if type A RCD used in a inverter, the type A RCD would be blind when smooth direct current occur, it could not detect direct current and trip, so the residual current would exist and would cause fire and dangerous hurting. As the following image illustrate different types could detect different fault current.

IEC 61140, clause 76.3.4 — Protection against electric shock:

In case of DC protective conductor currents > 6 mA

suitable protection devices shall be selected, e.g. type B”

So type B RCD could effectively detect and act when DC residual current occur.
